The Aga Khan foundation has donated equipment worth Ksh 6.5 million to Garissa vocational training to help the youth acquire skills and knowledge.

Monitoring and evaluation officer from the agency Mr Deo Ochieng said Lamu and Mandera Counties have also benefited from similar donations.

He said the project is aimed at making sure youth get enough skills for self-reliance and diverting them from engaging in criminal activities.

He said it’s unfortunate that many youths are ignoring technical courses yet they are marketable compared to white collar jobs which are mostly elusive.

This is the third time youths from the County will benefit from such a program which is funded by European Union.

The equipment the vocational training received includes ICT equipment such as computers and projectors, tailoring materials, beauty and saloon equipment.

“We are partnering with the County Government so that vocational training is assisted so that youth develop skills that can help them in future” said Mr Ochieng.

The function was attended by several members of the County Assembly and senior members of county executive committee members.

County Executive Committee member in charge of education Habiba Nasib said the County government will partner with all stakeholders supporting the education among the youth.

“Its technical skills that add value to our County Government, the County will work with all partners to ensure our youth get necessary ability on various issues,” she said.

She called on youth to take advantage of the program and enroll for available courses in the institute.

Others who attended the event include Trade CEC Adow Jubat and CEC in charge of youth, women and culture Zeinab Abdi.
