The enforcement of excise duty on airtime and data from 15 percent to 20 percent has raised voice call charges by up to 2 shillings.
The taxes have made Internet access and mobile phone calls costlier as the telecommunications firms notified customers of the new changes.
The new taxes will see the Treasury raise at least Sh8 billion from Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom Kenya.

“Dear customer, due to an increase in Excise Duty from 15% to 20% from 2nd July, your call rate is now Ksh 2.78 per minute. SMS and Data rates remain the same,” one of the telcos notified its customers.
The President had the option to back or reject the new taxes that MPs introduced in the government-backed Finance Bill after Parliament forwarded the Bill to State House for approval.
This proposal was however not included in the Finance Bill.
