A 33 year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a Kenyan snake species.
Karissa Iha was arrested on Tuesday, February 11, with a Python snake measuring 2.3 metres length and 10 kilograms in weight.
Police say Iha was arrested while passing through an Island screening area through the X-RAY when he was intercepted.
“On Tuesday, February 11, Ferry police officers in conjunction with Ferry security team recovered a suitcase from one Karissa Iha, Giriama male adult aged 33 years containing a Python snake of 2.3 metres long,” police said in a statement.
It was not clear how the man managed to handle such a venomous snake and carried it safely in his suitcase, or where he was taking the reptile.
Other sources claim he might have had struck a deal with foreigners to sell them the snake.
Police held the suspect at Ferry police station, Likoni sub county.
“He was arrested to be charged with the offence of dealing in a life wildlife species without permit or other lawful exemption contratu to section 95(c) of the wildlife conservation and managed Act 2013 as well as being in possession of a live wildlife species without a permit or lawful exemption contrary to section 95 (d) of the wildlife conservation management act of 2013,” police said in a statement.
