Over 5000 vulnerable girls and women are set to benefit from free sanitary towels from AMREF health Africa in partnership with Proctor and Gamble.
The initiative seeks to give three sanitary towels to disadvantaged slum dwellers across major regions who cannot afford the same.
According to Mette Kinoti the Group Programmes Director at Amref Health Africa The 16000 sanitary towels donated by P&G will be distributed through The Youth In action Network.
“For this contribution we have mapped out youth led organizations in Nairobi, Kilifi, Samburu and Kisumu most of which are female led and work in the informal settlements to support the distribution of these sanitary towels” said Kinoti
Most girls have been receiving the sanitary towels from ongoing school programmes which have currently been stopped due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
A Research by Menstrual Hygiene Day a global advocacy platform for nonprofit organisations and government agencies shows that 65% of women and girls in Kenya are un able to afford sanitary pads.
This comes even as it emerged that out of approximately 5 million girls in Kenya between the ages of 10 and 19, 2.6 require support to obtain menstrual hygiene materials. The WHO and UNICEF Report further states that 300,000 of the girls cannot access the sanitary wares due to cultural practices.
