Over 5,000 Identification Cards (ID’s) lie uncollected at Kisumu Huduma Centre one year after the applications were made.

The Centre Manager Nicholas Kijuba said efforts to trace the owners to collect the cards have been futile.

Applications made through the centre, he said are processed within 14 working days after which the owners are notified through text messages to collect them.

This, he said has not borne fruits as new ID’s continue to pile at the centre which records the highest number of registrations in the area.

“I have gone further to personally call them but out of 100 people I reached only 20 showed up,” said Kijuba.

“The bulk of those who come to collect their cards are those who applied for replacement and those who urgently need them to access certain services,” he added.

The centre which runs an outreach programme dubbed Huduma Mashinani, he disclosed, was doing everything possible to ensure the cards get to the owners.

Last month, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i who visited the centre raised concern over the high number of uncollected ID’s.

Matiang’i directed the centre to make use of Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to distribute the cards to the owners.

“We are in the process of sorting out the cards in respect to areas of residence of the applicants before we enlist the support of chiefs to distribute them,” said Kijuba.
