Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is now a man under siege, as a scheme to remove him from office is being hatched by a section of ODM and NASA members of the county Assembly.
Speaking exclusively to kenyanbusinessfeed.com on Tuesday 18th February, the Makongeni ward MCA who also doubles up as Minority chief whip in the assembly Peter Imwatok said that as ODM MCAs plans are underway to remove Sonko from office as they resume from recess today.
“As ODM MCAs we met at Ole Polos Country Club in Kajiado County on Monday 17th February and the meeting was chaired by our Nairobi county ODM chair Hon George Aladwa, in order to have a common stand on the governors fate and leadership in Nairobi,” Imwatok Said.
Imwatok further confirmed the meeting saying they had agreed to ‘clean’ Nairobi through Sonko’s Impeachment motion that is around the corner.
“As whip I can confirm that we had a meeting but we agreed to have sanity in Nairobi and the impeachment is in top gear, we are also mobilising like minded MCAs from Jubilee side and am telling you the support is overwhelming”, Imwatok added.
Kilimani MCA Moses Ogeto from ODM, also affirmed to kenyanbusinessfeed.com that Sonko’s impeachment motion is unstoppable and the plane must land this time round.
Meanwhile pro Sonko MCAs led by Majority chief whip June Ndegwa have accused their colleagues from ODM supporting the impeachment motion of betrayal and waste of time.
The Jubilee law makers have rubbished the impeachment motion saying that, they can’t risk impeaching Sonko as they will worsen the situation in Nairobi interms of Leadership crisis, that is already existing following Sonko’s corruption related case that is ongoing.
“we can’t impeach Sonko for now, but if Odm/Nasa mcas wants it let them try bring it on the floor, we shall show them the way, ‘June added.
Her sentiments were achoed by Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obuya who is an ODM legislator, terming Sonko’s impeachment as a thing of the past, further calling upon his colleagues to sober up and put the lives of Nairobi residents at hand before thinking of impeaching Sonko.
“we are not ready for by election, that’s waste of public money, we have no time because we are only left with one year and campaigns kicks off ahead of 2022,so lets leave the Governor alone to clear his name before the court,” Obuya added.
The governor is now walking on a tight rope with some MCAs trooping in his upper hill private office to collect hand-outs to withdraw their signatures to safe the situation.
Assembly was opened on Tuesday 18th February, from a long recess.
