The Board of MUHURI (Muslims for Human Rights) has appointed Marie Ramtu as the Executive Director (ED), effective August 1, 2021.
Ms Ramtu is a former Coordinator for Coalition for the Independence of the African Commission (CIAC), where she led the campaign to ensure that the independence of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Commsion).
She has extensive experience in the human rights field. She has worked with regional and international institutions for over a decade.
“Her appointment advances our interests in defending human rights and the rule of law, with a specific focus on minorities, and the marginalized’, MUHURI said in a statement.
She also previously worked with the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) and Church World Service (CWS) Africa, where she is credited with changing both organizations for the better.
“The ED comes at a critical time when we are pushing for electoral justice, rule of law and accountability ahead of the 2022 polls. Her stewardship will be decisive in ensuring adherence to a social justice framework before, during and after the elections in 2022. Moreover, MUHURI hopes that her leadership will increase attention to issues of inequalities, marginalization, and proper devolution, especially at the Coast,” MUHURI wrote.
