A new chapter is unfolding in Kenya’s rugby scene as Safaricom, through its M-PESA brand, makes a high-profile return to the sport after a ten-year absence.

With a Ksh 100 million sponsorship deal, the telecommunications giant is injecting fresh financial stability into both the national men’s sevens team, Shujaa, and the women’s sevens team, Kenya Lionesses.
For players and coaches, this partnership goes beyond financial support. It provides a structured framework that includes allowances, medical insurance and logistical backing, which are elements that define a professional sporting environment.
Shujaa’s Head Coach, Kevin Wambua, pointed to the immediate impact on player welfare.
“In December, Chrisant Ojwang suffered an ankle dislocation during the Dubai Sevens. Surgery was performed immediately, and he returned to action in two months,” Wambua explained.
The sponsorship also factors in digital coaching strategies, with airtime allowances enabling seamless video analysis and tactical briefings.
Vincent Onyala, a key figure in the Shujaa squad, illustrated the practical benefits of financial security.
“I have money in my pocket, and at least now I can afford to eat beef every day. You know, beef is the building block for the game,” he remarked with a laugh.
As Shujaa competes in the 2024–2025 World Rugby Series, the focus remains on securing a top-eight finish to retain its standing.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Lionesses are gearing up for the Challenger Series in South Africa, targeting entry into the global circuit.
With Safaricom’s backing, the Kenya Rugby Union is optimistic that this renewed corporate interest will create a ripple effect, drawing more sponsors to the game.
For a sport that has long struggled with financial uncertainty, this investment signals a step towards long-term sustainability, allowing Kenya’s top rugby teams to focus entirely on their performance on the global stage.
