Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) have not spared Chief Justice Martha Koome after she released a statement on the arrests of Justices Aggrey Muchelule and Said Chitembwe.
The CJ whose statement was read as sitting on the fence is shared below.
STATEMENT OF THE HON. CHIEF JUSTICE ON THE ARREST OF JUSTICES AGGREY MUCHELULE AND SAID JUMA CHITEMBWE
I have been briefed by Justices Aggrey Muchelule and Said Juma Chitembwe on details of their arrest yesterday.
The two Judges have notified me that they recorded statements at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters following a search of their chambers at the Milimani Law Courts.
However, no formal report has been made to me as the Head of the Judiciary or the Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission.
The arrest of the two Judges has caused anxiety among Judges and Judicial Officers.
I assure all Judges and Judicial officers that the independence of the Judiciary and their constitutional duties are protected by the Constitution. They should therefore continue discharging their duties without any fear in accordance with their oath of office.
I take note that the matter has been filed at the High Court and any comments on it are inappropriate. I will await findings of the investigations and at the opportune time, make a full statement.
Signed
Hon. Justice Martha Koome,
EBS CHIEF JUSTICE & PRESIDENT OF THE SUPREME COURT OF KENYA
