A world-class treatment facility has been unveiled in Kisumu County.
Maxcure Hospital will complement cancer treatment and other medical interventions in the region.
While unveiling the hospital Tuesday, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said that his government has invested in strategies geared towards positioning Kisumu as a destination of choice for medical tourism.
“I am encouraged to note that one of the core areas you will focus your services on is cancer management. Cancer as we are all aware remains one of the major afflictions impoverishing our people,” the Governor told the hospital’s management.
The multi-million private facility will have a 64 Slice CT Scanner with a capacity of interventional radiology that can help detect cancers at an early stage.
Prof. Nyong’o who was speaking at the official opening ceremony also attended by former Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga pleaded with the hospital’s management to factor in moderate charges and also allow patients who are covered with NHIF to attract ordinary mwananchi.
He said that the investment will contribute to the growth of the local economy by creating employment opportunities to residents.
The governor further challenged investors in healthcare to emphasize on research in other medical interventions such as the use of herbal medicine.
“I look forward to the day when hospitals such as this will have two streams offering clients either Western or traditional Medicare. China has successfully implemented this strategy in their healthcare system with very encouraging outcomes,” observed Nyong’o.
Mr. Rohan Patel, the hospital director said that the facility plans to increase the number of critical beds care to 9 from the 3 in its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 2 in the High Dependency Unit.
The establishment is also equipped with a current state of the art radiology unit with a high definition Xray systems and ultrasonography, the first of its kind in Kisumu and other neighboring counties.
“The primary focus of Maxcure Hospital would be to have enough doctors available for patients with different ailments,” said Patel. He disclosed that in the future, the facility will be upgraded to a fully-fledged hospital able to carry out transplant medication.
He added it will tackle 50 – 60 percent of common emergencies and general ailments in the area.
Public health institutions have also witnessed a massive infrastructural development resulting in their expansion and equipping since 2017.
During the onset of Covid-19 pandemic, the county established an Ultra-modern Covid-19 care center at Jaramogi Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
A Ksh 50 million Oxygen production plant has also been put up to help sustain supplies to the ICU and the Covid-19 wards. In addition, a Comprehensive Cancer treatment center, one of the largest in the country is under construction.
