State-owned Kenya Electricity Generating Company has closed the Olkaria Geothermal Spa effective today.
The decision is meant to contain the spread of Covid-19 virus which has so far infected 4 Kenyans.
Olkaria Geothermal Spa is a popular getaway for many Kenyans who want to take a dip in the naturally warm waters from the bowels of the earth.
The spa water is natural with no treatment having been done to it. Some salty water known as brine is pumped through large pipes at 300 degrees Celsius before being allowed to cool and thereafter released into the pool at between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius. Tourists trickle in here to enjoy the warm water’s medicinal values.
The profitable state corporation under the management of Ms Rebecca Miano announced the closure via a brief statement on their social media accounts.”PUBLIC NOTICE: This is to inform the Public that the Olkaria Geothermal Spa has been closed. This is in line with the directive to avoid congregating & minimize attendance to social gatherings. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. #COVID19KE“, the notice stated.
