Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards will have their three-year sponsorship deals terminated just two years after entering the agreement with a gaming firm.
The shirt deals agreed in December 2020 and worth a combined Sh270 million were due to run until next year but both clubs have now been sent notices of termination over ‘challenging economic times’.
The letter, dated May 31, 2022 was sent to both clubs stating why they have decided to part ways with the two most decorated clubs in Kenya.
“We write to you to inform you of our decision to terminate our sponsorship partnership agreement… This decision has been difficult for us and has been largely precipitated by the challenging economic times which has made it difficult for us to meet our financial projections,” read part of the latter.
Confirming receipt of the letter, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier told Citizen Digital in an exclusive interview that they are yet to respond.
“I have called for a meeting we discuss as an office then see how well to address it with our sponsors. We are yet to respond to the letter but indeed they have said they will be ending partnership at the end of the season,” noted Rachier.
Under the partnership, Gor would receive Sh55 million every year with Leopards getting Sh35 million.
Both clubs agreed a 50pc reduction of their packages in July last year over financial challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
