The tourism sector in the coast region got a major boost after an inaugural chartered flight from Sofia, Bulgaria landed with 177 passengers and crew on board at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa county.
The sector received its first inaugural chartered flight this year operated by European Air.
Speaking during the reception of the tourists Kenya Tourist Board Director of Marketing Fred Okeyo said the arrival of the flight is a testimony of confidence in the county as a tourist destination.
He pointed out the move is a result of the amazing hard work from the organization and tourism stakeholders.
“We applaud the hard work by Pollmans Tours & Safaris and partners who have made it possible for the inaugural chartered flight from Sofia, Bulgaria to arrive with 161 passengers into the country,” he pointed out.
Okeyo reiterated the aviation department is a key pillar and aspect in the sector in the growth of the country as a tourist destination.
He was addressing journalists at Mombasa’s Moi international airport during the arrival of the first inaugural flight in Mombasa county.The KTB officer said the government has been strict in adherence with the health protocol to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic making the country safe as a tourist destination.
Okeyo who was flanked by Pollmans Tours & Safaris Group Director of operations Mohamed Hersi and the company Group Director of Finance Lambodara Hotta assured tourists the country is safe apart from being an attractive destination.
He added the flight is a sign of the growing interest in Kenya’s tourism products from Eastern Europe.
“The tourists won’t regret getting into the country with a world experience of in the industry,” he added.
On his part, Hersi told journalists they have been waiting for the arrival of the tourists from the inaugural chartered flight for nine months despite challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He pointed out most of them will be doing beach holidays and 80 percent of them will be doing two to three days safari mainly to Amboseli National Park and Tsavo East National Park.”The attraction of the inaugural flight is the link between Amboseli National Park and the Tsavo National Park with Moi International airport,” he disclosed.
