African champion Beatrice Chepkoech Saturday emerged victorious in the 3000 metres steeplechase during the second leg of the 2019 Diamond League series in Shanghai, China.

Chepkoech completed the race in a world record time of 9 minutes, 04.53 seconds beating compatriot Celliphine Chespol to the second spot.

Peruth Chemutai of Uganda finished third.

Winny Chebet was beaten to the 7th position in the women’s 1500 metres after she completed the event in a time of 4 minutes 02.94 seconds.

Rababe Arafi of Morocco won the event ahead of Gudaf Tsegey of Ethiopia and Winnie Nanyondo of Uganda. Kenya’s Nicholas Kimeli finished 6th in the men’s 5000 metres race which was dominated by the Ethiopians.

Yomif Kejelcha clinched victory ahead of his compatriots Selemon Berega and Hagos Gebrhiwet who finished second and third respectively.

The third leg of the series will be held in Stockholm Sweden on the 30th of this month.
