The 2025 Otamatsuri Gaming Convention turned the Kenyatta International Convention Centre into a high-energy showcase of competitive play and pop culture, drawing thousands of Kenyan gamers and fans into one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the region.

Safaricom, which provided ultra-fast 5G connectivity for the event, positioned itself at the centre of a rapidly growing digital entertainment sector that is increasingly defined by speed, stability, and community-driven engagement.

The annual convention, now in its latest edition, attracted crowds for a packed weekend of tournaments, performances, and cultural exhibitions, with its organisers branding it as a landmark for Kenya’s evolving e-sports and creative economy.

Safaricom’s deployment of 5G at the venue allowed players to experience uninterrupted gameplay and low-latency online interaction, features that are indispensable for professional-level competitions and for sustaining the increasingly globalised nature of online gaming.

The company’s involvement underlined both its commercial ambitions in data-driven services and its role in shaping the digital infrastructure that underpins new segments of Kenya’s entertainment market.

“We are proud to partner with Otamatsuri to power this year’s convention with our 5G network. This is not just about showcasing speed and reliability; it is about enabling experiences, connecting communities, and supporting the growth of gaming culture in Kenya,” said Fawzia Ali, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom, noting that the company views the gaming sector as a critical area for future data growth and customer engagement.

From an operational standpoint, the most prominent feature was the LAN Party, an all-night marathon in which players connected personal PCs and consoles to a high-speed local network, competing head-to-head in strategy, shooter, and sports titles for prizes and recognition.

Organisers described the LAN setup as a test of both technical capacity and community spirit, combining festival-style celebration with structured competition.

For many participants, the experience demonstrated how reliable broadband can transform recreational gaming into a semi-professional activity with real prospects for growth in Kenya’s youthful market.

Event co-founder Jotham Micah of Movie Jabber observed that turnout had surpassed expectations, saying: “The speed and stability of the 5G network has been a game-changer for our competitors. We are optimistic about growing this convention to even greater heights in the coming year.”

His comments reflected the wider optimism of organisers and industry observers who see the Kenyan gaming market as a frontier for both cultural influence and commercial development, particularly as more young consumers embrace digital entertainment.

For veteran gamers, the event offered a moment of reflection on how far the sector has come.

“I started gaming 20 years ago and seeing how the community has grown is incredible.

Events like this show how far we have come.

Reliable network connectivity is at the heart of gaming, and providers like Safaricom have been instrumental in making gaming and e-sports possible in Kenya,” said Murray Lidambiza, one of the longest-serving players in the community, adding that without robust internet infrastructure, the competitive element of gaming would not be viable.

Beyond the competitions, Otamatsuri broadened its cultural footprint by showcasing film, music, cosplay, and merchandise, blending traditional pop culture elements with digital innovation to create a multi-faceted festival atmosphere.

The combination of entertainment formats reinforced the event’s role not just as a gaming convention, but as a wider cultural platform that reflects Kenya’s shifting youth preferences, its expanding digital economy, and the rising relevance of 5G-enabled services in daily life.

At a time when telecommunications companies are seeking fresh avenues for revenue growth beyond voice and mobile money, Safaricom’s sponsorship of Otamatsuri suggests a deliberate alignment with entertainment and data-intensive consumption trends.

By anchoring its 5G proposition within a youth-driven event of this scale, the operator has signalled both its technological readiness and its strategic intention to play a leading role in Kenya’s fast-changing digital lifestyle economy.
