President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday morning rolled out an 8-point stimulus program valued at Sh53.7 billion that will be used to jumpstart the economy which has been severed by the coronavirus pandemic.
The program will focus on key sectors that drive the Kenyan economy like infrastructure, education, health, agriculture and tourism. The program will also feature othe miscellaneous sectors like SMEs, environment and manufacturing.
In infrastructure, Uhuru has set aside Sh5 billion to hire local labour to repair damaged access roads, foot bridges and other public infrastructure that have been affected by the ongoing rains in various parts of the country.
The education sector will receive Sh6.5 billion to hire 10,000 teachers and 1,000 ICT interns to support digital learning countrywide.
The government plans to hire 5,000 more healthcare workers with diploma and certificate education level for one year to enhance public health system.
Hotels and related establishments will also get soft loans in an effort to support tourism. The government will also buy locally manufactured vehicles worth Sh600m to promote local car assembly firms.
