The Ministry of Health has ordered Kerugoya Hospital to stop admitting new patients.
This follows the recommendation by a joint health regulatory body which inspected the hospital and found out that the waste disposal management and hospital hygiene was in dire condition.
The Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board says the hospital will only receive emergency cases until the hospital hygiene is improved and maintained.
In its recommendations, the committee said the hospital will remain closed until the waste management system, water and sanitation is improved and maintained.
It further called for disciplinary action be taken against officials of the hospital in the next 21 days in what they termed as gross neglect of duty.
Among those recommended to be investigated for negligence of duty is the Hospital Manager Dr. Gideon Mburu, Hospital Administrator, Saesor Arthur Kamau, County and Hospital Public Health officer Evans Kago and Bernard Kamau. Nursing Manager, Ruth Mwai and Eva Wachuka the pharmacist in charge.
At the same time the inspectors recommended the strengthening of communication systems between the county Government and hospital management.
At the same time, Governor Anne Waiguru Wednesday met members of the Taskforce and together with Health Dept staff, they inspected the hospital to confirm health services have fully resumed in a clean environment.
” Both teams agreed on further actions to be taken by management over the next 21 days across all healthcare facilities in Kirinyaga to ensure proper patient care and service delivery.” She said.
“The Taskforce also uncovered a cartel of senior health officials who were unhappy over the firing of “Ghost Workers” hiding as casuals and sought to hit back with a “manufactured crisis” in health care.” She added.
She added that it is equally unfortunate others saw this as an opportunity to be used for personal, professional and political gain instead of supporting the cause of better health service delivery to Kenyans.
