Kenya on attained a crucial position within the highest decision-making body of the United Nations Tourism agency, following a diplomatically charged contest in which it prevailed over Thailand and Malta to join the Executive Council for the 2025–2029 cycle.
The announcement, made during the Second UN Tourism Africa and Americas Ministerial Summit held in Livingstone, Zambia, signals Nairobi’s expanding geopolitical leverage in matters of international travel governance and cross-border tourism development.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, in her official communication following the election outcome, acknowledged the continental unity that propelled Kenya’s successful bid and affirmed the country’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to policy direction that aligns tourism with long-term economic transformation and regional integration.
“Kenya is honoured to have been elected to the UN Tourism Executive Council for the 2025–2029 term, following a highly contested election,” Miano stated.
“This win is not just for Kenya; it is for Africa. It shows that our collective voice matters in global tourism governance.”
Kenya’s entry into the Executive Council introduces a new chapter in its diplomatic engagement with global tourism frameworks, granting it formal authority to shape multilateral decisions at a time when the industry is undergoing foundational shifts in sustainability imperatives, technological adoption, and inclusive economic models.
The selection outcome, which unfolded within a broader dialogue on cooperation between Africa and the Americas, is viewed as both a vote of confidence in Kenya’s strategic outlook and an acknowledgment of its evolving sophistication in tourism policy formulation.
Miano, speaking on behalf of the Kenyan delegation, reiterated the importance of leveraging this mandate not merely for national interest but as part of a shared continental ambition to redefine the role of tourism in social and economic revitalization.
“We are committed to championing policies that promote resilient, inclusive, and equitable tourism systems,” she added.
“Kenya will use its voice within the Council to elevate Africa’s tourism priorities and support development models that are community-driven, sustainable, and forward-thinking.”
This four-year tenure arrives at a moment when global tourism leadership demands nuanced engagement with challenges such as climate adaptation, digital transition, geopolitical realignments, and generational shifts in traveler expectations.
Kenya’s involvement is expected to influence structural reforms and foster collaborative pathways that place Africa in stronger negotiation positions within international tourism value chains.
The summit also provided a forum for tourism ministers, policy architects, private sector decision-makers, and development financiers from across both continents to co-create actionable frameworks around intra-African travel, innovation in visitor services, human capital enhancement, and intra-regional connectivity.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, speaking to the assembly, noted Africa’s expansive potential and urged alignment between local creativity, digital infrastructure, and youth-led innovation to drive forward-looking progress.
Kenya’s recent leadership roles within UN Tourism committees spanning thematic portfolios such as competitiveness, budgeting, and environmental policy further demonstrate its rising influence within the global tourism ecosystem.
With its election to the Executive Council, Kenya now acquires broader institutional reach to influence agenda-setting and to participate in steering the industry through its next evolution.
This outcome not only validates the strategic diplomatic groundwork laid in recent years but also opens space for Kenya to deepen continental partnerships while advancing a values-driven tourism ethos grounded in resilience, equity, and forward-thinking design.
