The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), has entered a groundbreaking collaboration with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to boost Kenya’s profile as a top sports and travel destination.
The partnership, launched under the Magical Kenya brand, is a six-month deal valued at Ksh 15 million, with an option to extend, aimed at leveraging the popularity of Kenyan football to promote both domestic and international tourism.

At the Nairobi ceremony where the Memorandum of Understanding was formalized, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, described the move as a strategic initiative to merge the appeal of sports with the country’s tourism offerings to grow the economy and attract global attention.
“Football unites people from all corners of Kenya and provides a unique platform to showcase our diverse travel experiences. By connecting sports and tourism, we can promote our national teams while drawing visitors to our destinations,” Miano remarked.
She added that the timing is ideal, with Kenya enjoying a strong football season alongside a busy tourism period. “The ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is co-hosting with Tanzania and Uganda, has put Kenya in the international spotlight. Such events create opportunities for hotels, transport providers, and retailers,” she noted.
Miano also congratulated the Harambee Stars on their recent achievements and wished them success in forthcoming fixtures, reflecting how national pride through sports can strengthen the country’s tourism appeal.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed described the initiative as a “collaboration of two powerful brands” that will support football’s growth while driving travel and tourism both locally and abroad.
“Football captures the passion of millions and inspires movement across counties. By joining forces with KTB, we aim to promote local travel, attract fans to new destinations, and raise the profile of our teams,” Mohammed said.
He noted that domestic football drives inter-county travel, fills hotels, and introduces visitors to lesser-known attractions, presenting economic opportunities across multiple sectors.
Mohammed added that government support has been vital, citing President William Ruto’s fulfillment of his Sh1 million pledge to each Harambee Stars player and coaching staff.
KTB CEO June Chepkemei expressed the board’s commitment to working closely with FKF to maximize the economic potential of sports tourism.
“Tourism is more than just natural landscapes; it fuels entrepreneurship and job creation, especially for the youth in hospitality. This partnership opens avenues for innovation and creativity,” Chepkemei said, noting that by 2027, the global football economy is projected to reach 1.7 trillion USD, and Kenya seeks to benefit from this growth.
The collaboration is anticipated to expand domestic tourism, provide wider exposure for local and international football talent, and contribute to Kenya’s creative industries.
The branding agreement also ensures Magical Kenya will feature prominently during FKF events and CHAN matches, linking football fandom with travel inspiration.
The announcement came a day before a key CHAN match for Harambee Stars, with calls for Kenyans to support the team both at the stadium and through broadcasts, showing how sports can energize the nation while promoting the country as a travel destination.
This alliance reflects a forward-looking approach to economic growth by leveraging the synergy between sports and tourism.
