Kenya’s largest bank by customer base is once again in the crosshairs from fraud.
According to Twitter User Abuga Makori (@Abuga_Makori), Equity Bank stole Sh270k from a man who was undergoing treatment in Eldoret.
A sick man withdraws Kshs20,000 from his Equity Bank in Kisii to start medication in Eldoret. He remains with Kshs270,000. After some days, he again goes to the bank to get the money. Unfortunately, he gets 0:00. Nobody has his PIN, not even the wife.
He asks the management to explain how his money got lost. The bank promises to get in touch as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, to date, he’s never gotten the money. He doesn’t have the App or Equitel. Why is the staff Equity Bank stealing from customers?
Other instances in the near past.
In October 2019, three Equity Bank staff are arrested on allegations of stealing Sh970k from a 67 year ol woman account.
The three; Anthony Babu Kaira, Kelvin Maina and Joseph Kariuki, were arrested in an intelligence operation by DCI detectives in Thika West.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects wired the money out of Faith Wanjiku’s account, through the mobile banking application, in about four transactions.
“The amount was transacted in four series using the Eazzy App in the sequence; Antony Kaira (Ksh.300,030), Kelvin Maina (Ksh. 300,030), Vivian Jelagat (Ksh300,030) and Ksh. 70K to various Equitel phone numbers,” said the DCI.
In 2019 again, a cleaner Brevin Lugembe at Equity conspired to steal Sh24 million from an account held at the bank.
