Being listed on CDP’s A-List for climate disclosure for the second consecutive year places Safaricom among the top 4% of companies globally recognized for environmental reporting.

The ranking reflects the company’s adoption of structured reporting tools to track, manage, and disclose greenhouse gas emissions across its operations.
According to the 2025 Sustainable Business Report, AI-powered dashboards and greenhouse gas management systems have improved the accuracy and reliability of emissions data.
These systems support compliance with international frameworks such as IFRS S1 and S2 and the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, while allowing the company to benchmark environmental performance against global standards.
“We introduced an internal carbon pricing mechanism and continue our reforestation efforts by planting over 2.3 million trees, contributing to the offsetting of residual emissions,” said CEO Peter Ndegwa.
He added that 1,432 Base Transceiver Stations have been solarised, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving operational resilience.
Ndegwa explained that integrating sustainability data into operational planning provides a basis for informed decision-making and risk management.
The company has set targets to operate 5,000 sites using solar power and to achieve 95% network reliance on green energy by 2030.
Plans also include planting five million trees across more than 5,000 hectares and working with suppliers to reduce emissions within the supply chain.
These measures aim to reduce environmental impact while maintaining continuity of operations.
CDP’s framework allows organisations to publicly disclose environmental performance, measure progress, and demonstrate accountability to regulators and investors.
“This recognition on CDP’s A-List reflects our commitment to disclosure and action. The company is using technology and reporting standards to monitor emissions and integrate sustainability into operational planning,” said Ndegwa.
The operator links environmental reporting to governance and operational oversight, ensuring that data informs both internal decision-making and compliance with climate-related regulations.
The A-List recognition provides a benchmark for evaluating progress and maintaining consistency in reporting.
Through the combination of structured emissions tracking, renewable energy deployment, and large-scale reforestation, Safaricom demonstrates measurable progress in environmental transparency.
CDP recognition consolidates the company’s position as a benchmark for corporate sustainability in Kenya and across Africa.
By integrating environmental stewardship into operational processes, the company maintains reliable service delivery while monitoring and managing climate-related impacts.
