The policies cover teaching liabilities, students’ personal accident covers, assets and other liabilities, pecuniary and institutions’ employees’ covers.

The Teaching Institution Liability Policy covers legal liabilities to third parties including liability claims related to professional and managerial negligence, employment practices, defence costs and reputational crisis management costs, intellectual property infringement & defamation, special tutoring liability, and ancillary services provision.

The student personal accident cover includes accidental death, permanent total disability, medical expenses, artificial appliances, accidental dental injuries, and funeralexpenses.

“Schools and educational institutions face a variety of unique risks that require specialized insurance protection. From students participating in sports to the inherent dangers of running chemistry classes and taking students on field trips, there’s a lot that educational institutions need to manage and protect. And that’s in addition to the typical issues most businesses prepare for like property damage or loss of critical school files and records,” said Minet Kenya Chief Executive Officer Sammy Muthui.

Other policies offered include fire and extraneous perils which covers indemnity for loss of or damage to property resulting from fire, lightning, explosion, spontaneous combustion, earthquake fire & shock and volcanic eruption, bush fire, riot, strike, and malicious damages.

“In the last few years, boarding schools in Kenya have experienced an unprecedented number of fire incidents and accidents. Apart from school infrastructure being destroyed, the unfortunate injuries and deaths to children have been recorded. The launch of these policies is informed by the desire to minimize the impact of such a loss to any school whenever such incidences occur,” said Muthui.

Some of the notable school fire incidences one include the 1998 Bombolulu Girls dorm fire where 26 students died, the 2001 Kyanguli High School incident that killed 63 students and the recent Moi Girls School Nairobi where 10 students died.
