Kenya and China are seeking to deepen their industrial and investment relationship as the 9th Kenya International Industrial Expo and Kenya Investment & Trade Fair 2026 opened in Nairobi.

The three-day event is running from September 3 to 5 at the Sarit Expo Centre, bringing together manufacturers, investors and technology companies from Kenya, China and other international markets.

Focus Shifts to Manufacturing and Investment

The expo covers a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, machinery, construction, energy, electronics, healthcare, hardware and industrial technology.

A key focus this year is moving beyond the conventional trade model in which Chinese companies primarily export finished goods to Kenya.

Organisers are instead encouraging greater investment in local manufacturing, assembly, technology transfer and skills development.

Guangdong Businesses Join Kenyan Market

The event also features the first organised participation of a business delegation from Guangdong Province, one of China's major manufacturing and trading centres.

The delegation is expected to connect Kenyan businesses with Chinese manufacturers and create opportunities in sourcing, distribution, manufacturing and investment.

Industrial machinery and processing technology are among the products receiving increased attention, with applications ranging from furniture and metal fabrication to construction, packaging and advertising.

Opportunities for Kenyan Businesses

The expo comes as Kenya seeks to increase domestic manufacturing and attract investment capable of creating jobs and expanding local production.

For Kenyan businesses, the event offers an opportunity to identify new suppliers, technologies and potential investment partners. For Chinese manufacturers, Kenya provides access to the East African market and a potential base for wider regional operations.

The shift towards investment and technology partnerships could also have longer-term implications for Kenya's industrialisation ambitions.

Rather than focusing only on the value of goods traded between the two countries, deeper partnerships could support local value addition, technical skills and manufacturing capacity.

The expo therefore presents a platform for Kenya-China relations to move further towards industrial cooperation, rather than remaining primarily centred on imports and exports.
