Fake New Currency: Three people in Embu caught with 100k fake banknotes

Three suspects have been arrested by police in Embu North after they were found with fake Ksh. 100,000 in new currency notes.

The suspects were caught following a tip off from residents in Manyatta trading market and the police swiftly moved in to arrest them.

The three were then taken to Manyatta Police Station where they are being held as they await to be arraigned in court once investigations are over.

The suspects wanted to take advantage of the locals’ lack of knowledge to distinguish security features of the new currency notes to swindle them.

Kenya’s new currency was introduced by The Central Bank of Kenya on 1st June during the Madaraka day celebrations. A promo video from CBK said that in order to identify if the bank note you have is genuine or fake, you need to feel, look and tilt

Here is a short guide to help you identify if the bank note you have is genuine or fake

  •  If you hold up the note to the light, a watermark of a lion’s head, the text CBK and the value of the bank note will appear.
  • If you tilt at an angle, the thread changes colour from red to green on all the bank notes.
  • To identify a genuine bank note; feel, look and tilt it. If you run your fingers over the note, you will feel the raised print on Kenya and also on the value.
  •  The notes also have a security thread which will appear as a continuous line.
