Botswana Vice President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe headed a high-level delegation to Kenya to benchmark the cooperative sector.

The delegation visited Kenya National Police DT Sacco to examine its governance, digital financial services, savings mobilisation and institutional sustainability.

Gaolathe said the discipline of the board members was remarkable and that the team left with lessons it will act on.

Sacco chairman David Mategwa said the engagement demonstrated the value of African institutions sharing solutions and could deepen cooperation across the continent.

Chief executive officer Solomon Atsiaya explained that the Sacco’s transformation is driven by continuously evolving around members’ needs, describing its digital platform as its “biggest branch” while stressing the need to encourage a strong savings culture.

The discussions also explored the broader role of cooperatives in supporting communities through education, healthcare, climate action and development projects.

Gaolathe invited the Sacco’s leadership to Botswana for a reciprocal learning visit, creating an opportunity for further exchange.

The visit forms part of Botswana’s effort to improve the performance and resilience of its cooperative institutions by drawing on Kenya’s SACCO movement as a regional example.
