Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko now says that cartels who want to supply Public Sanitisation Booths at an exaggerated cost are behind thye vandalisation of the booths installed at various public points by the Sonko Rescue Team.
The booths intalled in Kibra was vandalised on Monday night, with the governor confirming that the exercise was conducted by the Kibra Deputy County Commisioner under the orders of the Nairobi Regional Coordinator.
The governor has also linked Interior Principal Secreatry to the ltest troubles leveled against the SRT team.
But he notes that all this is being done to him because the SRT outfit is offering free services against the wishes of individuals who want to make money from the fight against Covid-19
“Cartels who wanted to supply Public Sanitation Booths at an exaggerated cost to the Government are not happy with Sonko Rescue Team which is an NGO and is installing the same for free in all public places hence the vandalism order by Nairobi Regional Coordinator (RC),” Sonko posted in his facebook account.
The governor says that the regional coordinator also went ahead and instructed the police to suspend all SRTservices in Nairobi. He posted a message he says was shared to him by some of the authorities.
“Good evening commanders. Please note it has been observed that the Sonko Rescue Team has been going round undertaking certain functions which belong to NMS. This has not been observed in good light. From the date of this information the DSICs are advised that Sonko Rescue Team is not recognized and therefore not allowed to conduct business in your AOR. Confirm copied.”
This comes days just after the governor raised concerns over the Sh1billion budget the County Assembly has allocated to the NMS to fight Covid-19, noting that the allocation was against the law.
The governor feels that some individuals in the state could be lining up to benefit from the NMS Covid-19 funds, but says he will remain vigilant over the use of any money allocated for Codid-19.
On Sunday, the governor unvailed close to 50 booths and was planning to install 150 of them across the city.
