The military led Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) has overseen expenditure worth Sh3.8 billion in less than three months.
The Junta whose financial use calculates to Sh42 million per day has engaged in various works including rehabilitation of streets, garbage collection and demolitions at night to pave way for improvements of sanitation infrastructure.
“Effects of their works cannot be seen, because the recent little rains tested the drainage system and found them wanting”, said a resident of Nairobi who spoke to KenyanBusinessFeed.com
Though most of the budget is to finance the recurrent budget of Sh2.25billion, the Major General Mohamed Badi led NMS, has not moved much away from the usual Nairobi cartel camaraderie.
As its been reported, the NMS has in recent weeks locked horns with Governor Mike Sonko’s administration over budgetary allocations for the next financial year starting July 1. President Uhuru Kenyatta sanctioned an allocation of Sh26.4 billion to run services in 2020/21.
The takeover of Nairobi and the failure of the illegal NMS to do its work will, at the end of the year, be blamed on Mike Sonko.
It is not my surprise that, last week’s Supplementary Budget came at a time Gen Badi has been complaining that the NMS has been struggling financially.
Democratic gains are being rolled back just like in 1964 when the opposition party Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU) leaders Ronald Ngala and Masinde Muliro crossed the floor to join Government essentially killing majimboism.
Brazen power grab
KenyanBusinessFeed.com doesn’t support the militarization of Nairobi and the subsequent transfer of the county’s administration into the president’s office.
What is worrying is the fact that politicians are clamouring for constitutional change which seeks to remove presidential term limits or extend his term through a new executive office.
Even as the independent offices and the other arms of government have been ‘slowed down’ in their efforts to remain independent, Kenyatta’s move to seize control of Nairobi raises questions about whether he will flout the norms in 2022.
