The country is reeling under the tough weight of COVID-19 pandemic that has worsened the already deteriorating economic situation.
A day after Mediamax sent home more than 100 staff, another media house Royal Media Services has started issuing its employees with redundancy letters.
Among those targeted in the first batch are those who work in the radio department.
Some of the employees who have allegedly been sent home include; Hot 96 FM Presenter Nancy Wanjiku Karanja known to many as Shix Kapienga, Radio Citizen presenters Syombua Osiany, John Maloba, Himenigilder Mugeni and others.
employees in other departments will learn of their fate in the course of the week, with early reports indicating that two TV presenters are already facing the sack.
In February, we broke the news exclusively that RMS was planning to fire some 300 staff members, this we learnt later that, only 10 staff in the sales department had been let go.
The management had decided on a salary reduction measure where staff would part with between 20 and 30 per cent of their pay.
After the pay cut, there’s something else that happened in the sales and marketing department. Some staff began seeing another unannounced pay cut.
“I looked at my payslip and noticed that my allowance to travel around looking for clients has been removed. We were only told about the other percentage that was hyped in the media, but this one has been done illegally”, one of the staff told KenyanBusinessfeed.com
On Sunday, June 21, over 100 Mediamax employees were notified of their redundancies, with most of the departments being swept clean.
Journalists from Switch TV and TV 47 have since been contracted to replace the staff.
Their layoffs came less than a year after the company sacked 160 employees in October 2019.
