Kenyans have reacted with shock and dismay following reports by a local media house about the inflated prices of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) especially on such simple things as landscaping where the government is reported to have used Sh1 billion on buying grass alone.
The contract documents further reveals that the airtime allowance for the lead engineer was Sh5 million for the 3 years the project was under construction. This was high and even if one is on phone all day long, the amount cannot be exhausted.
The SGR project was outright robbery, where Kenyans paid Sh1bn for grass & Sh239m to entertain Chinese contractors, who lived like kings on top-dollar salaries, contract documents reveal.
The SGR project acording to Raila Odinga, the AU High Representative for Infrastructure and Development, was supposed to cost USD 2.5billion (Sh250 billion), as tender given during the grand coalition government. The cost was inflated by Jubilee Government to USD3.75 billion then later USD4.5 billion (Sh455billion).
