The Nation Media Group in partnership with the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has organized the first-ever Sustainable Energy Conference dubbed ‘Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development’.
The conference will take place on the 16th and 17th of June at Olkaria in Nakuru County.
This is the first-ever Sustainable Energy Conference that seeks to engage various stakeholders including industry thought leaders such as Governments in the Region to ideate and drive critical strategies that will shape the sector in Kenya, the region, and the continent. Some of the key themes the Conference will explore will include Renewable Energy, Women in Energy, and Energy & Climate Change, among others.
The ticket is priced at Sh40,000 per delegate for the two-day conference attendance.
There’s also a gal dinner that has been organized among other necessities.
The overview of the conference is that the current global climate change crisis has necessitated the need to explore other alternatives to the generation of energy. Africa presents the greatest potential to diversify into greener solutions that will drive Africa’s current and future energy demand in a sustainable manner.
KenGen and Africa
KenGen has been on the forefront in pushing for sustainable geothermal energy across Kenya and has also expanded to other countries in Africa.
KenGen, which has embarked on a diversification strategy, leverages its expertise in geothermal energy by offering commercial drilling services, geothermal consulting and other energy-related services across Africa.
The CEO and MD of the state-owned energy producer Mrs. Rebecca Miano said the company’s strategic plan is to harness opportunities geared towards driving growth beyond Kenya.
“It is therefore our desire that in the next couple of years, we shall have considerable presence in countries within the Continent. It is also worth noting that we are not only keen on increasing our presence in Africa, but also enhancing energy capacities across the region,” she said.
KenGen won a Sh0.7 billion contract to drill three geothermal wells in Djibouti in 2021.
That was the third geothermal drilling contract that KenGen has won in Africa.
In October 2019, the company secured a Sh5.8 billion contract to drill 12 geothermal wells in Ethiopia. The contract with an independent power producer includes installing a water supply system and equipment.
In February 2019, KenGen won yet another contract for consultancy services and drilling geothermal wells. The contract is worth Sh7.6 billion. It has also developed partnerships with countries such as Ethiopia and Rwanda in renewable energy development.
KenGen is also looking at opportunities to drill geothermal wells in Rwanda.
