Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko says he will move to court to challenge the transfer of Nairobi County functions stating that he has never been furnished with a ‘deed of transfer”.
In a Facebook post, Sonko cited frustration orchestrated by his political enemies as the reason for his second thoughts.
Sonko was responding to one of his followers, who asked him to take responsibility for the mess in Nairobi and not engage in blame games over vandalized sanitisation booths in Kibra, Kencom and Buruburu.
“ When we started this process the President had good intentions on Nairobi but some of his greedy officers in gvt especially the ones who hate me have hijacked the process to embarrass and frustrate me with a lot of impunity,”
“I will not sign- infact this is the time to terminate the transfer of functions deed. To date I have not been furnished with a copy of the deed. I was not given sufficient time to even read the draft,” he said.
The controversial governor has earlier accused Internal Security PS Karanja Kibicho and Nairobi Regional Commissioner Wilson Njenga of ordering the bringing down of the booths, citing some NGOs ‘which want to install such booths at exorbitant prices”.
Let them kill me
A furious Sonko wrote that he will be starting the process of terminating the ‘deed of transfer” which he signed with Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, with President Uhuru Kenyatta and Speaker of Senate Ken Lusaka in attendance in February.
“I am starting the process of terminating the deed of transfer just like any other ordinary contract. I will now personally go to court to have it terminated. Let them kill me or jail me if they want ndio waendelee na ujinga zao when I am not your Governor,” he said.
At that time, many believed Sonko who was facing graft charges over proscurement irregularities concerning a garbage tender was being targeted.
Others have argued that the goal of the National Government has always been to destroy devolution and taking over Nairobi was the first step in that direction.
The embattled governor today went on social media, asking God to punish his destractors, who gave instructions for the Kibra, Kencom and Buruburu sanitization booths erected by Sonko Rescue Team (SRT) to be vandalized by the police.
“May those who have suspended our daily fumigation of Nairobi estates and slums, distribution of food, free masks and sanitizers rot in hell and burn in hell-fire including the Ps Karanja Kibicho and Rc Nairobi Wilson Njega who have behaved like the brood of vipers which were condemned to hell in the book of Mathew 23:33 which says “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” Sonko said.
Sonko officially handed over functions of the county government to the national one on 18th March 2020.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) took over revenue collection in Nairobi with KRA Commissioner-General James Mburu present to sign various documents to officially seal the transfer.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) was formed and Major General Mohammed Abdallah Badi was named as the Director-General of the NMS. Enosh Momanyi is his deputy.
Sonko and Major General Badi have not been in good terms since the transfer of some county staff to NMS.
