As the world comes out of the Covid-19 pandemic, and fears of a Third World War from the Ukraine-Russia conflict, there’s a new hazard in town; Monkeypox.
Several countries in the west have already confirmed cases.
As at the time of writing this, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, United States, Austria, Australia, Israel, and Switzerland.
Monkeypox does not tend to spread easily between people and the illness is usually mild.
The virus is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa.
More than 80 cases have been confirmed in the recent outbreak in Europe, the US, Canada and Australia.
Signs and symptoms
But what are the signs and symptoms of monkeypox?
They include headache, skin rash, fever, body aches, chills, swollen lymph nodes, and exhaustion. It produces symptoms similar to smallpox, but milder.
Incubation
The time from infection to the onset of symptoms, which is referred to as the incubation period, can range from five to 21 days.
Treatment
As per the US Center for Diseases Control (CDC), currently, there is no proven, safe treatment for monkeypox virus infection. For purposes of controlling a monkeypox outbreak in the United States, smallpox vaccine, antivirals, and vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) can be used.
