The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) is maximizing their time at the ongoing 94th Kenya Music Festival to create awareness and educate learners on safe internet use.
Under the theme ‘Kenya my Pride my Future‘ the Festival which concludes on Saturday is being held in Kisumu County, Nyanza region.
Kenya Music Festival Chairperson Peter Wanjohi has said they are partnering with CA to enlighten Students on the proper ways of using the internet purposely for class work.
“Communications Authority of Kenya are one of our partners this year and they come in with the theme child online protection and they are interacting with the Children practically teaching them on the safe use of the internet,” said Wanjohi.
Speaking in Kisumu Girls High School, the Chairperson pointed out that as technology advances, vices emerge and therefore it’s vital to continue educating students on how to use the internet in and within a safe environment.
At the same time, the CA representative at the Festival Jane Kinyanjui has said the organization is spearheading the child online protection program in a bid to empower the learner with skills, knowledge and information on online threats and the ways they can protect themselves.
“We are giving students and by extension, even teachers and parents the tools as well as skills to enable them to safeguard their online experience,” explained the representative.
Stacy John, a form two student from Itoleka Girls Secondary School in Kitui County lauded the online awareness creation program, saying she has benefitted immensely from it.
“What they have taught me about the internet is that their things we should abstain from the internet like watching pornography. I have also learnt how to avoid strangers,” said John.
Kinyanjui said CA has further invented an online software that filters and blocks students and young people from accessing unwanted sites.
“When you have this filtering and blocking software you are able to actually limit what children can see, respond to and what they can access,” she explained.
The representative said that although technology is regarded as impacting negatively on learners, it also plays a significant role in the education cycle of a child.
“We are contributing towards the creation of a digital citizen with the knowledge, skills and values to be able to use the internet for their own benefits for example in collaborative classrooms, research, innovation and showcasing of their abilities,” she added.
Kinyanjui said CA has similarly supported the composition of music set-pieces that spread and carry along online vice prevention messaging to every Kenyan across the country.
“Music is a very important mode of communication. When the lyrics and the composition come together it talks to us in a way that the spoken word cannot, in a way that a poster or a commercial will not, so when these students are composing the categories that we are sponsoring they are evangelizing the message,” she concluded.
