The government through the ministry of agriculture will use 254 million to fight locust invasion in Northern Kenya.
The Cabinet Secretary for agriculture Mwangi Kiunjuri says the ministry has received 50 million from Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to help in containing the spread of the desert locusts.
“To coordinate this exercise we have now set up a multi stake holder command and communication centre. That includes KALRO,KEPHIS,Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), University of Nairobi,Desert Locust Control Organisation of East Africa,FAO and ICIPE” said Kiunjuri.
The CS says the funds to counter the marauding locusts will come from the emergency kitty.
This comes even as the government released the second air spray aircraft to Isiolo to reinforce the operations.
The locusts have already spread across 6 counties Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Garisa, Isiolo and now Samburu.
Travelling in swans of between 40-80 million the locusts crossed into Kenya from Somalia on the 28th of December 2019.
