Ministry of Health Acting Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth has been elected World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Board chair for one year.
In a meeting that is ongoing in Geneva, India’s Dr Harsh Vardhan was replaced by Kenya’s Dr Amoth.
During the 149th session of the WHO Executive board, Vardhan announced a new Chair of WHO Executive Board. “Dr Patrick Amoth, Acting Director-General for Health, Ministry of Health of Kenya has been appointed as the Chair of WHO Executive Board,” Vardhan said.
In his acceptance speech, Amoth said he will undertake his duties and responsibilities with utmost commitment and humility.
“The opportunity to serve humanity in this way is also a deeply personal privilege, which I will cherish for years to come.
“As I assume this role, I wish to congratulate the outgoing Chair of the Board, Dr. Harsh Vadhan, for his unparalleled leadership and steadfast dedication, which we can all attest to. Dr. Vadhan, please accept the appreciation of the Board and best wishes for success and good health in your future endeavors,” he said.
He promised to rally WHO member states to end the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and secure a healthier and sustainable future.
“We must endeavour to utilize all the available tools at our disposal and remain steadfast in our fidelity to the basic founding principles of our great organization towards the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health.
“I will therefore be relying on your collective support, wisdom, patience and expertise as we seek to strengthen WHO and make it better able to deliver on the aspirations for which it was established,” he added.
