The Directorate of Criminal Investigations – DCI detectives have arrested two men who hail in Kisii county who are alleged to have scammed people that they are registering them to receive help from government during this Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the police, the duo, Brian Osoro Nyariki & Duke Sabungi Ongweso, both 22 years old had opened a fake Facebook account impersnating Kenya’s first lady Margaret Kenyatta, where they lured vulnerable members of the public to register with at least Ksh. 599 for consideration in a false ongoing issuance of Ksh. 30,000 stipend to cope with the pandemic.
DCI says, that once unsuspecting members if the public sent money, they were blocked and that’s when police swung into action.
“Once the money is received, the duo- who use multiple pseudo accounts to post on the page as having benefitted from the aid- block their victims as they use several sim cards to receive the cash. Several victims had been successfully defrauded prompting a manhunt for the two, in whose possession were recovered 53 Airtel and three Telecom simcards”, the DCI wrote on their social media pages.
Police say, appropriate charges to be preferred on the two including Publication of False Information contrary to Section 23 of Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act & Obtaining Money by False pretence contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code.
