The National Youth Service has announced plans to cash in on the need for Personal Protective Equipments (PPE) by manufacturing over 50,000 face masks per day.
Media reports indicate that the Director General of NYS Ms Matilda Sakwa has announced plans to stick 55,000 mask per day to bes sold at Sh55 each. This translates to Sh3,025,000
The DG who was sworn in by President Uhuru Kenyatta in september 2019 was a County Commissioner for Machakos County before replacing the former NYS DG Richard Ndubai in July 2018.
When Ms Sakwa was appointed, president Uhuru chasticed her to turn-around the fortunes of the tainted agency.
“You are a person with experience in the management of public resources and also in public service and administration. I have confidence that you will deliver not only to the Government but also to the people of Kenya. You have the capacity to take this organization to the next level,” the President Uhuru told Ms Sakwa in 2019.
Previously, NYS had been the scene of looting of billions of public money through dubious and questionable procurement practices, however, during Ms Sakwa’s time, the complaints has mostly been to do with lack of salaries for recruits and exam irregularities.
Covid-19 toll
Kenya has confirmed 225 caes of coronavirus, 53 patients have recovered; 10 are dead.
The disease has moved from the epicenter which is Nairobi and has now affected 11 out of 47 counties.
Nairobi still carries the bigger number of those infected at over 160 patients, followed by Mombasa city at 36.
