The richest football league is opening up slowly, with an approval on training starting tomorrow, after closing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, there are mixed feelings on the intended June 12th date for matches to commence again.
The teams have communicated that training will start tomorrow but they would allow teams to start training in small groups. The players are also mandated to observe social distancing and adhere to a series of strict criteria which includes getting dressed at home and driving to training grounds on their own.
When the league is expected to return in mid-june, there are plans to “show the matches on Free-to-air TVs with 3pm kick-offs”, the Britain’s Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed.
“I had some very constructive discussions on Thursday with the FA, the EFL and the Premier League. We are working hard to get it back in mid-June but the number one test is public safety. If we can do this in a safe way… they are looking at returning behind closed doors and they have met with Public Health England several times to look at the safety of that. If we can sort that out then I am hoping we can resume in mid-June. We are also hoping to have something a bit more ambitious with a bit more free-to-air matches available. People can watch from home which will be helpful in discouraging people from leaving their homes in order to watch it, which we don’t want to happen,” Dowden told Sky Sports.
